Hello gentle readers! Tamra here to tell you about a cause near and dear to me: Outreach 2 Appalachia's "Book and Blanket" campaign.
Book and Blanket is a seemingly simple concept: knitters and crocheters make a blanket and include a book for either children or seniors. But in the part of West Virginia where O2A ministers, books can be a rare sight. This area of the country can be compared to third world counties in terms of poverty. There is little enough money for food and clothes, forget about books. O2A plans to change that with their Book and Blanket drive. Generous crafters match up a book and a handmade blanket and send them to O2A's headquarters, where they are distributed to needy people in Appalachia. What can you do to help? If you are able to knit or crochet, please contribute blankets to O2A, they need all they can get with the flooding going on there. If you can't knit or crochet but would still like to help, you can donate books to O2A and they will match up the books to blankets that have been donated. The other cause I would like to discuss is Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. Before she was the beautiful county music star and millionaire, Dolly was the daughter of a poor, illiterate coal miner. Dolly was only one of eight children of Lee Parton, who worked hard in the mines to provide for them. When Dolly hit the big time, she didn't forget her roots, and began giving back to her community, in the form of the Imagination Library. The Imagination Library is a program that gives books to needy children from birth until the time they enter school. Once a child is signed up, they receive a new book a month until they are 5. Many hospitals participate by telling new parents about the program with the gift of a copy of "The Little Engine That Could" Dolly's favorite children's book. The Imagination Library is a great tool for parents who want to feed a love for reading in their children and for those who want their children to have access to books, but cannot afford them. There is no charge to the parents, that's right, the books are 100% free! Brand new books, delivered to the doorsteps of children all over the US and the world! There is an Imagination Library chapter in every county of West Virginia, including the regions hardest hit by the recent flooding, so between the efforts of the Imagination Library and O2A, many children will be able to have to comfort of a book.
